Why Tethered? A Legacy That Became a Mission

Sometimes the most meaningful things begin in the hardest moments.

Tethered By Grace began after the loss of a very special dog named Alexa.

To Jess, Alexa was never “just a dog.” She was family. She was a constant presence, a source of comfort, and the kind of dog who leaves a mark on a life that does not disappear when she is gone.

When Alexa passed away, there was grief — but there was also a question:

What if her story didn’t have to end here?

What if the love she gave could continue to reach people and dogs she would never meet?

What if her legacy could become something bigger?

That thought became Tethered By Grace.

At first, it was about honoring Alexa. About taking something heartbreaking and turning it into something meaningful.

But over the last several months, her legacy has grown into so much more.

It has grown into a vision for what the world of dogs can look like.

A world where families have access to trusted education before bringing a puppy or dog home.

A world where responsible, ethical breeding is encouraged and supported.

A world where people understand that training is not about perfection — it is about communication, confidence, patience, and trust.

A world where families searching for service dogs or assistance have somewhere to turn for honest guidance.

A world where the relationship between a person and their dog is treated as something worth protecting.

Because dogs give us so much.

They sit beside us through grief.

They celebrate the ordinary days.

They teach our children responsibility, compassion, and empathy.

They make us laugh when we desperately need it.

They work beside people as service dogs, therapy dogs, working dogs, and trusted companions.

And sometimes, without ever knowing it, they carry us through chapters of our lives we never thought we could survive.

That bond deserves to be nurtured.

That is why Tethered By Grace exists.

Our mission is to strengthen the bond between dogs and people through ethical stewardship, education, support, therapeutic work, and community connection.

And we believe real change begins long before a problem happens.

It begins with education.

It begins with helping someone recognize an ethical breeder.

It begins with teaching a new puppy family what those first weeks really look like.

It begins with helping someone understand the difference between a service dog, therapy dog, and emotional support animal.

It begins with giving families reliable resources instead of forcing them to sort through thousands of conflicting answers online.

It begins with supporting responsible training, responsible ownership, and responsible breeding.

It begins with one family.

One dog.

One relationship.

And then another.

This Is Where Pillars of Grace Comes In

Pillars of Grace is about building the foundation that allows this work to continue.

When someone becomes a Pillar of Grace, they are doing more than making a donation.

They are helping build something.

They are helping create educational resources that families can trust.

They are helping us grow programs like Guided By Grace, which supports families trying to navigate the often overwhelming world of service and assistance dogs.

They are helping us reach communities with education about training, behavior, responsible ownership, and ethical breeding.

They are helping us develop partnerships with trainers, veterinarians, breeders, organizations, and other professionals who believe dogs deserve thoughtful, responsible care.

They are helping us expand outreach and create opportunities that strengthen the human-dog bond.

And perhaps most importantly, they are helping us turn Alexa's legacy into something that continues to ripple outward.

One dog inspired this organization.

But this mission was never meant to stop with one dog.

Imagine how many families could benefit from having the right information before choosing a dog.

Imagine how many dogs could stay in loving homes because their families had access to training and support.

Imagine how many people could avoid scams, misinformation, or heartbreaking mistakes when searching for a service dog.

Imagine what could happen if ethical breeders, trainers, families, veterinarians, and advocates had a place where they could come together around one shared belief:

We can do better for dogs, and we can do better for the people who love them.

That is the future we are trying to build.

And we cannot build it alone.

Why Your Donation Matters

Tethered By Grace is still young.

In many ways, we are building the foundation right now.

That means every person who chooses to support us at this stage becomes part of our story.

Every donation helps us move an idea from “someday” to “we're doing it.”

It helps turn a resource into something a family can use.

An idea into a program.

A connection into a partnership.

A conversation into education.

A heartbreaking loss into a legacy that continues to create good.

There may never be another Alexa.

That is the beautiful thing about dogs.

Each one leaves something completely their own behind.

But because of Alexa, there can be more education.

More compassion.

More responsible choices.

More supported families.

Stronger relationships between people and dogs.

And hopefully, a better future for dogs everywhere.

That is why we are Tethered.

Tethered to the dogs who changed us.

Tethered to the people who love them.

Tethered to the belief that education and compassion can create lasting change.

And always, Tethered By Grace.

Who Was Your Alexa?

Maybe there has been a dog in your life who changed you, too.

A dog who grew up with your children.

A dog who carried you through a difficult season.

A dog who made an ordinary house feel like home.

A dog who taught you patience, loyalty, joy, or unconditional love.

Maybe they are still curled up beside you today.

Or maybe, like Alexa, they are deeply missed.

Who is — or who was — that special dog in your life?

We would love to hear about them.

Tell us their name. Tell us what made them unforgettable. Tell us about the silly habits, the quiet moments, the adventures, the comfort, and the love that only they could give.

Because Alexa's story created a ripple.

That ripple became Tethered By Grace.

And we believe the dogs who have changed your life deserve to create ripples, too.

When you share their story, honor them through a gift, or become a Pillar of Grace in their name, their impact becomes part of something larger.

One dog. One story. One ripple at a time.

Become a Pillar of Grace

If this mission speaks to you, we invite you to become part of what comes next.

Your donation to Pillars of Grace helps us continue building programs, education, resources, partnerships, and community outreach that strengthen the bond between dogs and people.

Alexa's story started this.

Together, we get to decide how far her legacy reaches.

Live with heart. Lead with grace.
